Halloween has arrived early this year in the most horrifying way possible.

According to The Guardian, two Floridians discovered a dead bat inside a bag of pre-packaged salad they bought at a local Walmart this week — but only after they'd already eaten some of the salad. The pair immediately contacted the authorities after discovering the dead bat, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to launch an investigation.

The Guardian goes on to report that the bat was then sent to a CDC rabies lab, but could not be given a definitive test due to its "decayed state." As a precaution, the pair have been recommended for treatment, despite it being "extremely uncommon" for someone to contract rabies from eating an infected animal.

"Both people report being in good health and neither has any signs of rabies," the CDC said in a statement.

USA Today reports that the salad in question is the "Organic Marketside Spring Mix" by Fresh Express. The company has since issued a recall for lot G089B19 with a "best by" date of April 14, and has specified that this batch was shipped to Walmart stores in the southeastern United States. At this time, no one else has reported finding bat remains in their bagged salads.

"The recall was necessitated when Fresh Express was notified that extraneous animal matter was allegedly found in a single container of the salad," the company said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, all salads manufactured in the same production run are being recalled."

"Fresh Express takes matters of food safety very seriously and rigorously complies with all food safety regulations including the proscribed Good Agricultural Practices," they continued.

The salads have since been pulled from Walmart shelves.
