Choosing the perfect baby name can be a long process, involving searching through baby name books, asking friends and seeking advice from family members. This can sometimes, however, muddy the waters, especially when asking for opinions from those in a different generation to you.

According to a new survey by Mumsnet and its sister site Gransnet, grandparents and parents can clash over the naming process.

After more than 2,000 parents and grandparents were surveyed, it was found that a fifth of grandparents hate or have hated their grandchildren's names. And one in six parents said they have a parent or in-law who doesn't like their child's name.

Many of the older generation are not fans of trendy, odd or unconventional names, such as Aurora, Tabitha, Finn or Elijah.

On the other hand, some grandmas and grandpas dislike old-fashioned names for their young relatives.

The most disliked baby names according to grandparents are:

Girls:

  • Aurora
  • Charlotte
  • Edna
  • Lindsay
  • Sally
  • Bertha
  • Tabitha

Boys:

  • Jack
  • Noah
  • Roger
  • Elijah
  • Frank
  • Finn
  • Ian

One in 10 grandparents thought the name would be embarrassing for the child, it reminded them of someone they didn't like or they were disappointed a family name was not used. Being too hard to pronounce or too difficult to spell were also reasons some grandparents were not keen on the nomenclature.

Interestingly, the strongest objections tended to come from grandmothers rather than grandfathers.

If you're stuck for baby names yourself, you might find some inspiration in a baby name book. Just make sure both generations agree!
