Princess Diana famously called Camilla Parker Bowles the "third person" in her marriage to Prince Charles. And according to Diana's account of things, Charles didn't keep his affections for Camilla very secret during their marriage.
In his writings about Diana, based on recordings she sent to him, journalist Andrew Morton describes her account of Charles' open communication with Camilla, even as they were planning the wedding of the decade. In the Daily Mail's excerpt from a new release of Morton's book, Diana: Her True Story, it's clear Diana felt the massive emotional effects from the so-called "third person" in her marriage to Charles.
Diana apparently said she once overheard Charles talking to Camilla on the phone. Charles was apparently "on the telephone in his bath" while she was on the other side of the door. She claimed she heard him say, "Whatever happens, I will always love you." Diana confronted Charles later and the two "had a filthy row."
Charles and Camilla even had nicknames for each other, Fred and Gladys. Charles had a bracelet made for Camilla with a blue disc with "G and F" on it two weeks before he married Diana. His blatant relationship with Camilla made Diana question marrying him in the first place. She said she told her sisters she couldn't go through with it, and they told her she had to do it. "They were wonderful and said: 'Well, bad luck, Duch (her childhood nickname), your face is on the tea-towels so you're too late to chicken out,'" Diana said.
Diana claimed the stress of all this helped contribute to her bulimia, which she said set in after they got engaged. "My husband put his hand on my waistline and said: 'Oh, a bit chubby here, aren't we?' and that triggered off something in me," she said. "And the Camilla thing. I was desperate, desperate."
