Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis, who died Sunday at 91, was never shy about his wild years as a Hollywood superstar. And in one outrageous anecdote, he claimed he once had an affair with one of the most famous blonde bombshells in history: Marilyn Monroe.

In a 2011 interview with GQ, Lewis at first wouldn't name names about who he was romantic with during his day, but at the same time insisted Monroe never had that rumored affair with President Kennedy. When the author expressed skepticism, Lewis admitted he indeed did have an affair with Monroe.

"I'm telling you what I know. Never! And the only reason I know is because I did. Okay?" Wait, what?? He nods, adding that Monroe used sex like he uses humor: to make an emotional connection. "She needed that contact to be sure it was real." Okay, but what was it like, I ask, to make love to the most famously tragic sexpot of all time? "It was…" he says, taking a beat, "long." He smiles ruefully. "I was crippled for a month." Another pause. "And I thought Marlene Dietrich was great!"

This may have just been Lewis's bawdy sense of humor, and there's no way to independently confirm any affair happened. But Lewis did say that while he and Dean Martin hosted the Colgate Comedy Hour in the early 1950s, he was sleeping with "everybody in Hollywood," despite being married to his first wife, Patti. According to People, the two divorced in 1980, Lewis married his second wife, SanDee Pitnick, in 1983 and stayed together until Lewis's death.
